Eli Lily Shares have outperformed the industry Zacks Large Cap Pharmaceuticals over the past year (+59.6% vs. +26.0%) driven by Lilly’s strong core drug portfolio for diabetes, autoimmune diseases and cancer. Lilly’s revenue growth is driven by increased demand for drugs like Trulicity, Taltz and others. It regularly adds promising new pipeline assets through business development agreements.

It has an exciting pipeline of potential new drugs, including tirzepatide for type II diabetes and donanemab for early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Both candidates have multi-billion dollar sales potential.

However, generic competition for several drugs, increasing price pressure in the United States, mainly on the key drug, Trulicity, and price reductions in some international markets such as China, Japan and Europe are headwinds.

Conoco Phillips shares have slightly outperformed industry Zacks Oil and Gas – Integrated – USA over the past year (+96.1% vs. +89.5%). The company owns a large portion of the acres in the unconventional areas of the Eagle Ford Shale, Permian Basin and Bakken Shale. The Zacks analyst believes there are significant opportunities for the company in the Bakken shales, where it has about 750 undrilled locations that could provide access to huge reserves.

Notably, the company has revised up its scheduled return of capital to shareholders for 2022 to $10 billion, reflecting an increase from the previously mentioned $8 billion. COP projects its 2022 production at 1.76 MMBoe/d, suggesting an improvement from the 1.6 MMBoe/d reported last year. In addition, the company’s balance sheet is significantly less leveraged than that of the sector to which it belongs. Its massive liquidity position will allow it to repay short-term debt of $1,160 million. Given these tailwinds, ConocoPhillips is considered a favorite energy company to own now.

ANC shares are down -8.0% over the past year against Zacks Banks – Major regional industry down -12.4%. The Zacks analyst believes increased spending will likely continue to hurt bottom line in the near term. Although the Fed has raised interest rates and signaled further hikes this year, the general low interest rate environment could weigh on the bank’s net interest margin (NIM) in the near term. The lack of diversification of the loan portfolio is a concern.

However, economic growth and robust pipelines should support loan and deposit balances, which will help its balance sheet. Planned investments in inorganic expansion strategies will strengthen its banking franchise and diversify its business mix. Healthy capital deployment activities are further positives.
