The end of blog comments?

Over the past decade, comments have moved from specific websites to general social media platforms, dramatically changing the way people interact with longer content (such as blogs, sub-stacks, newspapers and journalism). No site can match the breadth of audience and engagement found on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and more. This has led to a very marked reduction in the quality of reviews on more specialized sites (like RealClimate), as many of you have. observed. This is not an issue that seems to lend itself to stricter moderation.

We are therefore leaning towards the suspension of comments and open discussions on the blog. Feel free to comment on this decision below. If the discussion is good and substantial, it will weigh in favor of continuing the commentary function. On the contrary, if it is superficial and unnecessarily hostile, it is likely to be the last comment thread on this blog. We would still post articles, but we anticipate that comments and reviews will be hosted elsewhere.

As a replacement, we’re happy to explore ways to better link relevant social media discussions – suggestions for plugins/methods are welcome.
