Blippi the musical was an unknown entity to me until I babysat my nephew Otis. At just two years old, he was obsessed with this blue and orange character (and knew how to handle his mom’s iPad better than me…).

It was scrolling through videos, pausing and rewinding, and it made me realize how in tune children are with technology these days, which is fantastic! But it also made me think there should be a push to re-engage them with live performances. So the idea of ​​putting on a YouTube show on stage, while it wasn’t something we had thought of before, quickly became something I couldn’t get out of my head.

The last few years have been difficult. The industry has shut down due to the Covid pandemic and we are far from fully recovered from the financial and health repercussions of it. Bringing a show on stage that was created through a social media platform such as YouTube is just another way for producers to think outside the box within the industry, to bring fresh content. but relevant to the public.

All production is currently a risk and it is difficult to gain investor confidence during a period that has consisted of so many shifts and brick walls. That being said, it is our duty to ensure that the content we bring to the stage feeds a wide variety of audiences and not just those that interest us personally.

Creating a children’s production versus an adult show is an incredibly different process that challenges both the creative team and the production team to relate to who they pitch the story to. High energy and bright colors are obvious options for a children’s production, but with diminishing attention spans due to the introduction of platforms such as Tik-Tok, teams really need to think outside the box to keep their attention.

Shows such as Blippi the musical give important insight into how the magic of theater can create a story before your eyes while teaching you essential life lessons. Our hope is that by focusing more time on the children’s market, we will be able to introduce individuals to theater at a younger age and hopefully help in some way to cement the public of the future.

It’s incredibly exciting to produce a show like Blippi – oftentimes social media platforms like YouTube can be seen as unproductive for kids, but we shouldn’t overlook its benefits. Basically, Blippi is a learning resource that grew out of YouTube – it keeps kids curious and gives them the freedom to ask questions about the world they’re growing up in. So, in my opinion, what better than to combine the valuable assets of social media channels like this, with the thrill of live theater? The result is the most exciting lesson in the world!

Blippi the musical may be one of the first shows on YouTube in the West End, but it certainly won’t be the last.
