Intern Blog: Behind the Scenes with an Intern

PORTSMOUTH, Virginia (WAVY) – My name is Amaya Mitchell and I work as a production intern at WAVY-TV 10.

As a child, I was always told to dream big, but I never realized that dreams can really come true. My dream job is to someday be a news anchor, and I knew this incredible opportunity was a step in the right direction.

While most people think of interns as the ones who have coffee or just answer phone calls, I’m proud to say that my experience has only been a hands-on learning. Every morning when I walk through the door I am greeted by smiling faces who are eager to help me learn whenever they have the chance. They answer all my questions and always put me to work so that I can gain experience.

I also have the pleasure of working on The Hampton Roads Show under the supervision of producer Stephanie Cooke and show hosts Chris Reckling and Chelsea Khan. Before the show, they allow me to set up the set, take microphones for the guests and help them find topics to cover on the show. Then they give me a preview of the show and allow me to help get some cool social media videos and pictures, while they’re on the air. After the show, I help write some of the content for their web page. Hopefully I will start directing soon and gain more experience on how to successfully direct and direct a show.

I am more than blessed to work with some of the most talented people. I can’t wait to see the rest.
