Artists Wanted for Tukwila’s Utility Box Art Program

The City of Tukwila is launching its Utility Box 2022 Art Program and is looking for artists to create artwork for this year’s program.

This program supports the vitality and attractiveness of the city, as well as local artists.

The deadline for applications is April 22, 2022 at 5 p.m.

Budget: $500 to $1,000 per work, all inclusive

WHAT ARTISTS NEED TO KNOW:

    • This opportunity is open to artists working in all mediums as long as the final artwork can be successfully translated into a digital file for printing so that it can be converted to vinyl wrap.
    • The city will be responsible for printing and installing the vinyl art on the utility boxes.
    • Artists will receive a budget of up to $1,000.
    • Artists will receive artwork credit on the box.
    • Learn more about the program of artists selected last year.
    • Artists who want help applying can join the Virtual application support workshop for potential artists April 5, 6-7 p.m. In addition to individual questions, the workshop will address questions regarding the content of the application, access to a computer or the Internet for the purpose of submitting an application, or questions not already answered in this document.

    • Artists not selected to create artwork in 2022 will also be considered for inclusion in the City of Tukwila Public Art List for future projects.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

    • Applicants must be a professional artist and must live in King County.
    • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and not full-time students.
    • Community groups or student groups may apply if the lead applicant and point of contact are a professional artist committed to carrying out the group project.
    • Applicants cannot be members of the Tukwila Arts Commission or employees of the Town of Tukwila.

IF YOU ARE SELECTED:

    • Selected artists will be required to attend an orientation meeting where they will receive additional information on the process and expectations for creating successful utility box artwork.
    • Artists will develop a proposal including a concept sketch and written description for review and may receive requests for revisions prior to final approval.

ENVELOPE DESIGN GUIDELINES:

    • Designs must be appropriate for display in public spaces and for viewing by the general public.
    • Designs should engage all sides of the box.
    • Designs must not have been previously used for utility box art in King County.

2022 UTILITY BOX PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

    • April 5: Virtual Application Workshop for Prospective Artists, 6-7 p.m.
    • April 22: Deadline for submission of applications, at 5 p.m.
    • May 13: Notification of artist selection
    • May 23-27 (to be determined): Virtual orientation meeting for artists selected to create utility box art in 2022
    • June 10: Work proposal under review
    • July 29: Final design due as a digital file
    • August: Manufacture and installation of envelopes

    • We suggest sending items 1, 2 and 4 as PDF documents.
    • Word documents are also accepted.
    • Emails larger than 10MB may need to be sent in multiple messages.
    • Please do not send zip files.

Short written answers (1)

    • Submit answers to the following questions, in one page or less (combined).
    • Include Artist name, address, telephone, e-mail address and date of birth clearly indicated at the top of the document.

Questions to answer:

    • How will your artwork and images translate successfully into this art form?
    • How will your artwork take into consideration multiple types of viewers – pedestrians, motorists, cyclists.
    • What themes or inspiration inspire your works? List specific work samples that you have included as part of this application that are representative of the artwork you are considering for this opportunity. If the work you intend to create for this opportunity differs from the sample work you provided, clearly explain how it differs.

Professional CV (2)

    • The CV must not exceed 2 pages and must include: name, address, telephone, e-mail address of the artist.
    • List the most recent public art and/or artistic experience first.

Work samples (3)

Up to 10 digital images of the artist’s finished work.

    • Send only JPEG files (do not use GIF, TIFF or other formats). File dimensions should be 2050 pixels on the longest side, 72 ppi – 300 ppi, maximum 5MB per file.

Resize images online for free (more options are available):

    • Image Optimizer: Click “choose file” to upload image, select “normal”, input max width “2050”, max height “2050”, upload resized image.
    • Adobe Creative Cloud Express: Click “Resize photo”, click “upload file” to upload the image, enter “2050”px for the longest side and the other dimension will adjust automatically, at this point ignore the MB number , click “Resize image”, slide quality level to control the file size for a maximum file size of 5MB.
    • Shopify: Click “Resize your image”, click “Download now” to download the image, select options for “medium” file size, download the resized image.

The files must be titled with a number indicating the order of viewing, followed by the name of the applicant.

    • Numbers must match the work sample description sheet.
    • Use a “0” in front of single-digit numbers and only use letters, numbers, and underscores. Example: 01_Smith.jpg; 02_Smith.jpg

If possible, your work samples should feature artwork that is representative of what you intend to submit for the design concept of this project.

    • Artists may use up to two images to showcase concept sketches, but this is NOT a requirement and will NOT give artists an added advantage. This is meant to be an optional additional tool to clearly communicate what you intend to do for this project.

Images numbered consecutively and listed in the order in which they should be viewed include:

    • Title of the work
    • Average
    • Dimensions (H” x W” x D”)
    • Year of end of work
    • Location (City, State. Neighborhood), if applicable
    • Funding organization or owner/collection, if applicable
    • Budget, if applicable
    • Brief description of the work (3 sentences maximum)
    • If the work is presented as part of a collaboration, explain your role within the project and credit design team or individual collaborators by name and role.
